Moss Agate, despite its name, is not truly an agate but a variety of chalcedony with inclusions of minerals like manganese or iron that create moss-like patterns. It’s primarily found in India, Brazil, and the United States. There’s no lab-grown version since its unique patterns are a natural phenomenon.
Etymology
The name “moss agate” comes from its moss-like inclusions, although it’s technically not an agate but a type of chalcedony. It’s also known as:
Mocha Stone, named after the Yemeni port of Mocha, where a similar stone was once traded.
Dendritic Agate or Tree Agate due to its tree or fern-like patterns.
