Predominantly found in Brazil, India, and Uruguay, onyx’s black variety is often dyed to enhance or create the color. Lab-grown onyx would aim to replicate this uniform color and banding.

Etymology

The name “onyx” derives from the Greek word “onyx,” meaning “claw” or “fingernail,” due to the belief that the goddess Venus cut her nails and left them on the ground, which turned into onyx. It shares its name with:
