Agate Information

Agate is a form of chalcedony, which is a microcrystalline variety of quartz. Its formation generally occurs within volcanic or metamorphic rocks, where it fills cavities or voids created by gases in cooling lava. The process involves silica-rich groundwater seeping into these cavities, depositing layers of silica gel which then crystallizes into chalcedony. Over time, this process repeats, creating the characteristic banded patterns of agate. The bands form due to variations in the silica deposition conditions, possibly influenced by changes in the composition or temperature of the depositing fluids.

Name Origin

Agate gets its name from the Achates River in Sicily, where it was first discovered. The term ‘agate’ was coined by Theophrastus, a Greek philosopher, in the 4th or 3rd century BCE. The river is now known as the Dirillo River.

History & Mythology

Ancient Use: Agate was used in ancient Greece for jewelry, seals, and as talismans. It has been found in bead necklaces from the Indus Valley Civilization dating back to 3000 BCE.

Mythology: In ancient times, agate was believed to bring about balance and harmony, to cure the stings of scorpions and snake bites, and to offer protection, particularly from storms. It was also thought to enhance courage, strength, and eloquence.

Cosmic Junction

Mythological Creatures: Agate is sometimes associated with the mythical serpentine creature, the Basilisk, which could be warded off by agate’s protective properties.

Planets: Astrologically, agate is often linked with Mercury, symbolizing communication, adaptability, and mental agility.

Energies: Agate is considered a grounding stone, promoting stability, harmony, and balance. It’s believed to connect one with the earth’s energies, enhancing emotional, physical, and intellectual balance.

Mining

Agate is found in many places worldwide, with notable deposits in Brazil, Uruguay, the United States (especially Oregon), and parts of Europe like Germany. Mining involves locating the geological formations where agate is likely to occur, often within volcanic rocks, and extracting the nodules or geodes.

Care Guide

  • Cleaning: Use a soft, dry cloth to wipe the stainless steel components (hooks, pins, daisies, and caps). For glass, ceramic, and stone beads, gently wipe with a damp cloth and dry thoroughly. Avoid soaking any part of the earrings in water. A soft-bristled toothbrush can be used to gently clean intricate areas.
  • Storage: Store earrings in a dry, cool environment, ideally in a jewelry box or pouch to prevent scratches and dust buildup. To prevent tangling or abrasion, keep earrings separated from other jewelry items, especially those with sharp edges or rough surfaces.
  • Stainless Steel Care: Stainless steel is durable but can still tarnish over time if exposed to moisture or harsh chemicals. Wipe the stainless steel components occasionally with a jewelry cloth designed for metals to maintain their shine. Avoid exposure to perfumes, lotions, or other substances that could cause discoloration.
  • Stone and Bead Care:
    • Cat’s Eye Glass & Artstone: These beads are durable, but avoid exposing them to excessive heat or direct sunlight, which could cause discoloration. Gently wipe them with a damp cloth to remove dirt or oils.
    • Glazed Ceramic Beads: Ceramic beads may chip or break if dropped. Handle with care and store them in a secure place to prevent damage.
    • Dyed Agate & Lapis Lazuli: These stones are naturally sturdy, but the dyed surface can be sensitive to chemicals and prolonged exposure to water. Keep them away from cosmetics and perfumes. Clean with a soft cloth to avoid damaging the surface.
    • Seashell & Glass Beads: Seashell beads can be delicate, so avoid exposing them to extreme temperatures or direct sunlight. Glass beads should be cleaned gently to avoid scratches.
  • General Durability: While these earrings are designed for everyday wear, avoid wearing them while sleeping, exercising, or performing heavy tasks that might cause impact. Always check the integrity of the hooks and pins before wearing to ensure they are secure.

Weight Priciples

In principle I keep the weight below 5 grams per earring, so it doesn’t stretch or hurt your ears even if you wear it the whole day. Occasionally, for some designs, that weight limit exceeds by a gram – every pair has their specific weight marked under the overview tab.

Note that some earring hooks have thicker wires, and if you are not used to wearing earrings daily, using them will feel uncomfortable in the beginning.
