Agate is a form of chalcedony, which is a microcrystalline variety of quartz. The process involves silica-rich groundwater seeping into these cavities, depositing layers of silica gel which then crystallizes into chalcedony. Over time, this process repeats, creating the characteristic banded patterns of agate. The bands form due to variations in the silica deposition conditions, possibly influenced by changes in the composition or temperature of the depositing fluids.

Name Origin

Agate gets its name from the Achates River in Sicily, where it was first discovered. The term ‘agate’ was coined by Theophrastus, a Greek philosopher, in the 4th or 3rd century BCE. The river is now known as the Dirillo River.
