Peridot – The Gem of the Sun

Peridot is a vibrant green gemstone, a gem-quality variety of the mineral olivine. Its formation occurs deep within the Earth’s mantle under high temperatures and pressures, and volcanic activity brings it to the surface. Peridot’s distinctive yellow-green to olive-green hues result from the presence of iron within its crystal structure. Significant sources of peridot include the San Carlos Apache Reservation in Arizona, USA, Myanmar, Pakistan, and China. Notably, peridot is one of the few gemstones that occur in only one color, although the intensity and tint can vary depending on the iron content.

Etymology

The name “peridot” likely derives from the Arabic word faridat, meaning “gem.” Historically, some referred to it as “chrysolite,” from the Greek words chryso (gold) and lithos (stone), highlighting its golden-green hue. Also has names like Evening Emerald, Gem of the Sun.

Peridot is closely related to: Olivine: The mineral family to which peridot belongs. Zabargad: An ancient name for peridot, originating from the island in the Red Sea where it was mined.

    Cosmic Junction

Peridot has been cherished across cultures for its beauty and perceived protective qualities. The ancient Egyptians called it the “gem of the sun,” believing it could ward off the “terrors of the night,” especially when set in gold.
They also believed that peridot could protect its owner from evil spirits.

In Hawaiian folklore, peridot symbolizes the tears of Pele, the goddess of volcanoes and fire. Locals consider these gems sacred, representing the goddess’s strength and the islands’ volcanic origins.

Metaphysically, peridot is associated with strength and balance. It’s believed to bring peace, health, and rest by harmonizing the mind and body. Additionally, peridot is thought to boost creativity and improve mood.

    Care Guide

    Durability

Gold-Plated Brass English Lock Lyre Hooks: Elegant and stylish, but the gold plating can wear off over time. Avoid rough handling to prevent scratches.
Beads (Semi-Precious Stone, Pearl, Seashell, Artglass, etc.): Durable but can be prone to surface scratches. Handle with care to maintain their luster.
Koi Fish Charms (Painted and Plated): The painted charms are delicate, while the plated charms can easily scratch. Both types add unique charm but require gentle handling to avoid damage.

    Suitability

Casual Wear: These earrings can be worn for casual outings. Be mindful of moisture and abrasive contact to preserve their beauty.
Daily Wear: Comfortable for regular use due to hypoallergenic materials. However, limit exposure to water, sweat, and cosmetics to extend the life of the gold plating.
Special Occasions: Perfect for special events. The unique koi fish charms and intricate designs add an elegant touch. Handle gently to maintain their pristine condition.

    Storage

Store in provided lock bags to protect from dust, moisture, and scratches.
Keep separate from other jewelry to avoid tangling and potential damage to the plating and delicate charms.
Prevent exposure to sunlight, moisture, and chemicals to reduce the risk of color fading and oxidation.

    Cleaning

Gently wipe with a small microfiber cloth meant for jewelry polishing to remove fingerprints and restore shine.
It is fine to clean with water, but ensure thorough drying to prevent oxidation of the findings.
Avoid using abrasive or chemical cleaners, as these can damage the gold plating and delicate surfaces.

    Additional Tips

Be mindful of the large size and intricate design to avoid tangling in hair.
Treat the koi fish charms gently, as bending them back and forth can lead to breakage over time.
For plated charms prone to fingerprints, breathe on them and wipe off with the polishing cloth provided.
Avoid contact with perfumes, hairsprays, and household cleaners to maintain the plating and charm finishes.
Protect from prolonged exposure to water or humid environments to ensure longevity.
