In principle I keep the weight below 5 grams per earring, so it doesn’t stretch or hurt your ears even if you wear it the whole day. Occasionally, for some designs, that weight limit exceeds by a gram – every pair has their specific weight marked under the general description or “dimensions” tab.
Onyx, a variety of chalcedony, is known for its deep black color with white bands, though it can also come in various other colors like brown or red. Predominantly found in Brazil, India, and Uruguay, onyx’s black variety is often dyed to enhance or create the color. Lab-grown onyx would aim to replicate this uniform color and banding.
The name “onyx” derives from the Greek word “onyx,” meaning “claw” or “fingernail,” due to the belief that the goddess Venus cut her nails and left them on the ground, which turned into onyx. It shares its name with:
Black Onyx, specifically for the dyed black variety.
Sardonyx, which combines onyx with sard for a banded appearance in red and black.
Onyx resonates with Saturn, symbolizing discipline, protection, and grounding. It’s strongly connected to the root chakra, enhancing stability, strength, and security:
Ancient Roman Beliefs: Onyx was used to carve cameos and intaglios, believed to protect against evil and bring emotional balance. It was thought to imbue the wearer with courage and strength.
Greek Mythology: Linked to the story of Venus, onyx was seen as a stone of protection and grounding, used to access inner wisdom and banish grief.
Middle Eastern Traditions: In Islamic cultures, onyx is considered a symbol of strength and resistance against adversity, often used in protective amulets.
Modern Metaphysical Use: Onyx is used for grounding, helping to release negative emotions and to foster inner strength during times of stress or confusion.
Black Dyeing: Natural onyx might be gray or have lighter bands; it’s often dyed black to enhance its color uniformity and depth. This involves soaking in black dye, typically after treatment with acid to increase porosity.
Heat Treatment: Sometimes combined with dyeing, heat can be used to alter or stabilize color, especially in creating sardonyx from naturally banded chalcedony.
