Olivine Peridot Information

Natural olivine peridot beads captivate with their vibrant green hues, ranging from yellow-green to olive. These stones stand out for their brightness and vitality, making them a popular choice for jewelry. As a symbol of strength and renewal, peridot adds a fresh, natural touch to various designs, from casual to elegant.

Formation

Peridot forms deep within the Earth’s mantle under high temperature and pressure. It is a variety of olivine, rich in magnesium and iron. As magma cools, peridot crystals solidify and rise to the surface through volcanic activity. You can find natural peridot in both igneous rocks and meteorites, making it a rare and sought-after gem.

Fashion and Jewelry

Peridot beads shine in vibrant jewelry pieces, often used to create bold, eye-catching designs. Their green shades look stunning in necklaces, bracelets, earrings, and rings. Artisans typically facet these beads to enhance their natural sparkle, though peridot can also appear in smooth, polished forms. Peridot beads pair beautifully with gold and silver accents, and their color works well in both summer and winter collections.

History, Mythology, and Symbolism

In ancient Egypt, people called peridot the “gem of the sun,” – it protected them from evil spirits. The Romans used it to soothe the mind and bring happiness. Today, peridot is a stone of abundance and vitality. Perifot symbolizes renewal and marks new beginnings – a favourite among those seeking personal growth and transformation.

Mining, Production, and Applications

Peridot is primarily mined in regions such as Pakistan, Myanmar, and Arizona, USA. While some peridot comes from volcanic rocks, others come from meteorites, which adds to the stone’s mystique. Skilled artisans cut and polish peridot beads, focusing on the gem’s natural beauty. These beads appear in fine jewelry as well as casual and boho designs, showcasing their versatility in the fashion world.

Care Guide

Durability

  • Olivine Peridot Beads: Peridot is a relatively durable semi-precious stone but can be susceptible to scratches and cracks under rough handling or sudden impacts. Handle with care to avoid any damage to the beads.
  • Antique Copper-Style Brass Findings: Brass is strong but can tarnish over time when exposed to moisture or chemicals. It’s important to store the earrings properly and clean them regularly to maintain their appearance.

Suitability

  • Casual Wear: The natural olive-green hues of peridot make these earrings a versatile option for everyday wear, adding a subtle pop of color to your outfit.
  • Special Occasions: Their natural elegance also makes them suitable for more formal or special occasions, where a sophisticated touch is needed.

Storage

  • Store the earrings in a soft pouch, jewelry box, or hermetic bag when not in use to prevent scratches or damage from contact with other jewelry.
  • Keep them in a dry environment to protect the peridot from moisture and the brass findings from tarnishing.

Cleaning

  • Olivine Peridot Beads: Clean gently with a soft, dry cloth to remove dust or oils. For a deeper clean, you can use a damp cloth, but avoid soaking the beads in water, as prolonged exposure could cause damage.
  • Brass Findings: Brass can develop a natural patina over time. Use a jewelry polishing cloth designed for brass to maintain its shine. You can also use a gentle brass cleaner, but avoid overuse to maintain the natural finish.
  • General Care: Avoid harsh chemicals, abrasives, or cleaning agents that could harm the beads or the brass components.

General Care Tips

  • Avoid contact with perfumes, lotions, and other chemicals, as these can damage both the peridot beads and the brass findings.
  • Remove the earrings before swimming, showering, or engaging in activities where they could be exposed to water or chemicals.

Weight Priciples

In principle I keep the weight below 5 grams per earring, so it doesn’t stretch or hurt your ears even if you wear it the whole day. Occasionally, for some designs, that weight limit exceeds by a gram – every pair has their specific weight marked under the overview tab.

Note that some earring hooks have thicker wires, and if you are not used to wearing earrings daily, using them will feel uncomfortable in the beginning.
