Shoushan Stone Information

Shoushan stone, also known as pagodite or agalmatolite, is a beautiful and versatile material primarily found in China. This unique stone features a soft, soapy texture, with colors ranging from greyish green to yellowish. Artisans appreciate Shoushan stone for its ease of carving and its stunning visual appeal, making it a popular choice for various decorative and functional items.

Fashion and Jewelry

Shoushan stone shines in the fashion and jewelry sectors. Artisans carve it into intricate pendants, beads, and other decorative pieces. Its soft texture allows for detailed designs, giving jewelry a unique, organic feel. The subtle hues of Shoushan stone make it an excellent choice for both casual and formal wear, as it complements a wide array of outfits. Additionally, the stone’s lightweight nature ensures comfortable wear, allowing individuals to showcase its beauty effortlessly.

History, Mythology, and Symbolism

Shoushan stone holds a significant place in Chinese culture. Historically, it has been associated with artistic expression and craftsmanship. The stone symbolizes purity, tranquility, and harmony, making it a favored material for creating decorative objects, statues, and carvings. In Chinese mythology, Shoushan stone is often linked to spiritual practices and is believed to promote peace and clarity of thought. Its unique beauty and cultural significance make it a cherished material among collectors and enthusiasts.

Mining, Production, and Applications

Shoushan stone primarily comes from specific regions in China, where it forms in metamorphic environments. Miners extract it from the earth with care to preserve its natural beauty. Once harvested, skilled artisans begin the production process, transforming raw stone into intricately designed pieces. Beyond jewelry and decorative art, Shoushan stone also serves practical applications, including soapstone’s use in carving and crafting kitchenware. Its softness allows for detailed work, making it ideal for both functional items and artistic expressions. This multifaceted material continues to capture the hearts of many, thanks to its beauty and versatility.

Care Guide

Durability

  • Shoushan Stone Beads: Shoushan stone is a durable semi-precious material, but it can be prone to scratching and chipping if exposed to hard surfaces or rough handling. Be mindful of impact to preserve its smooth surface.
  • Antique Copper-Style Brass Findings: Brass is generally strong, but it can tarnish over time when exposed to moisture, sweat, or chemicals. It’s best to treat it with care to prevent wear and oxidation.

Suitability

  • Casual Wear: These earrings add a touch of natural elegance to everyday outfits, perfect for a variety of casual occasions.
  • Special Occasions: The warm tones of Shoushan stone can also complement more formal or festive attire, especially with a bohemian or earthy theme.

Storage

  • Store the earrings in a soft pouch, jewelry box, or hermetic bag when not in use to prevent them from being scratched or damaged by other jewelry pieces.
  • Keep the earrings in a dry environment, as excessive moisture can affect both the Shoushan stone and the brass components.

Cleaning

  • Shoushan Stone Beads: Clean gently with a soft, dry cloth. If necessary, use a slightly damp cloth, but avoid soaking the stone in water as it may affect its appearance.
  • Brass Findings: Over time, brass can develop a natural patina. To clean, use a soft cloth or a jewelry polishing cloth designed for brass. If you prefer a shiny finish, a brass cleaner can be used sparingly, but make sure it’s suitable for delicate materials.
  • General Care: Avoid using harsh chemicals or abrasive materials when cleaning, as these could damage the beads or tarnish the brass.

General Care Tips

  • Keep the earrings away from direct contact with perfumes, lotions, or cleaning agents, as these can damage both the stone and the brass components.
  • Remove the earrings before swimming, showering, or participating in activities that may expose them to excessive moisture or chemicals.

Weight Priciples

In principle I keep the weight below 5 grams per earring, so it doesn’t stretch or hurt your ears even if you wear it the whole day. Occasionally, for some designs, that weight limit exceeds by a gram – every pair has their specific weight marked under the overview tab.

Note that some earring hooks have thicker wires, and if you are not used to wearing earrings daily, using them will feel uncomfortable in the beginning.
